How A Man Quit His Job To Build An Empire From His Bedroom

Quitting a job and starting our own business is a dream that most people covet. Steve Wangara did more than covet when he quit his job in a local bank to venture into business. He is an IT guru who is currently the Managing Director at Pacetech Informations Systems Ltd.

He was interviewed by Jevans Nyabiange and here is his story.

What was he doing before?
I quit working at a local bank as an IT support and decided to go full time into self employment. I had formed Pacetech which was initially dealing in IT & Communications, selling computers but in 2009, I decided to diversify to offer more security solutions for laptops and mobile phones tracking and recovery.

How was life in the gutter?
I started my business from scratch with no office, operating from home to the clients’ office. Capital was not enough, had only savings from previous employment. I remember pleading with clients to pay first before I could supply. Being a start up entrepreneur has a lot of challenges, the biggest being working capital. I used to go to local banks with purchase orders but they would insist on collateral to secure the financing. Consolidated Bank was helpful as they funded my projects from the go while others turned me away.

When did he get his first break?
2010 was a good year when I managed to secure partnership with world’s best Location Based Services who needed the technology behind our services and products.

What is his typical working day?
I’m up at 4.00 am. I dedicate an hour to arrange the day’s work and reply to pending e-mails. At 5.30 I work out for about 30 minutes. 7.30 I am already in the office. During the day I coordinate all staff, handle clients and interact with partners. I get back home around 7 pm and retire to bed at around 12 am.

What are his current deals/ businesses?
I own another firm Pacetrack Autocenter ltd which deals with vehicle security and accessories. We are currently supporting multinationals and local companies with our products and services.
His biggest influence in life?
My wife Susan who has been very supportive through thick and thin and has shared my vision through this journey.

Biggest mistake ever made?
Taking a loan and had I had not planned what to do with the money.
Life Biggest lesson in his career path?
Patience pays and God helps those who help themselves.
Steve Wangara concludes by saying that every day is a learning day. Ask yourself what you achieved, learnt and never lose hope in life.
